Hello – please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Virginia Arrisueño, and I am the owner and lead designer of DeNada, a knit accessories line specializing in handmade knits for men and women. Inspired by my Peruvian heritage, I continually strive to offer high-quality knitwear with a blend of contemporary style and ethnic elements.
When did you know you wanted to design scarves?
I graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Maryland. I’ve always loved knits and working with fibers, therefore, it was only natural to get into knitwear design. Starting DeNada was a perfect opportunity for me to combine my love of business and design into a fulfilling career.
Tell us about your design process.
I am always inspired by everything around me - from my Peruvian heritage to music and current trends. I try to make all my designs as versatile as possible, while staying true to my personal aesthetic.
What sort of creative challenges do you face?
I tend to like chunky, abstract, and uniquely designed knitwear. It can sometimes be hard to restrain myself and scale those designs down to a more wearable piece appealing to wider demographic.
Tell us a bit more about the artisans you work with as well as their hand-weaving techniques.
I travel to Peru about two times a year to work with artisans one on one to create my growing collection of knits. I am always impressed and inspired by the artisans I work with. They create several of our designs utilizing traditions that were passed down to them from their ancestors. Learning from their shared techniques is priceless as a designer, and it’s such an honor and privilege to work with them. Many of these artisans are more than just workers – they have become family to me, whose relationships I value immensely.
Where are you based and where do you like to spend your free time and find inspiration?
I am based in Washington, DC. I have a 2 years old son named, Atticus. When I am not working, I love to spend my free time with him and with my husband. As I mentioned before, everything around me inspires me, but most of all I always keep my son in mind to keep me going and remind me what’s truly important in life – family.
Do you have any style tips for scarf aficionados?
Scarves have the power to accent any outfit. Try to find different ways of wearing your scarf, whether it is pulling it over your head or draping it across your body.
